How to have a sustainable period

Doing the research for this post was shocking. I’ll share some of the facts that blew my mind;

  • Manufacturers of sanitary products are not required to disclose what materials are in their products,

  • Many menstrual products also contain synthetic fragrances, which can contain up to 3,900 different chemicals, some of which, like those listed above, have been identified as potential carcinogens, irritants, hormone disruptors and reproductive toxicants.

  • Menstrual products are made up of up to 90% plastic.

This news is rather upsetting especially thinking about the fact that menstrual waste cannot be recycles as it is considered medical waste.

It’s not all gloom and doom because in the past 5-10 years there has been a lot of innovation in sanitary products that are kinder to women and the planet.

In the past 3 years I have been using a menstrual cup and I absolutely love it. My cramps are almost non-existent and I do not have to constantly change my pad/tampon.

So, here are 3 tips that can help you have a more sustainable period;

  1. Investigate different menstrual products e.g. cups, reusable pads and period underwear and try them out,

  2. If none of those work for you, consider pure cotton tampons and pads,

  3. Buy locally made (depending on where you live) sanitary products
