The Cosmetics industry is a waste powerhouse and the statistics are astounding. 120 billion pieces of plastic are created by this industry alone.

If you look in your bathroom right now, you likely have more than 5 products and majority of them are in plastic packaging. Plastic use and packaging is prolific in the cosmetics industry and beyond that, the industry is constantly marketing that we need more and more products, 10 step skincare routine anyone?

So how can you be more mindful of the impact of your skincare/bodycare routine on the planet;

  1. Buy less! Do you really need 4 cleansers and 5 toners, perhaps not. Just reducing your products to one of each will reduce the amount of plastic waste and probably save you some money,

  2. Use multipurpose products. Plain shea butter or oils can be great products that work well for body and hair. A shea butter mix could be used to seal hair and moisturise your body or even feet,

  3. Ditch Face Wipes! For one, they take a minimum of 100 years to decompose and secondly they just push dirt and make up around your face.

  4. Use reusable cotton pads or even better, apply toners with your fingers. There are reusable cloth pads now that can be put in the wash every few days,

  5. Finish before you purchase. Try and use up every last drop of your product before you buy a new one. This could be for your skincare and make up. Spend a bit more and treat yourself to a new lipgloss, cleanser, foundation only after you have finished one item.

  6. Support local brands. Apart from saving on carbon emissions of having to buy products that are shipped in, you also support a local business potentially sourcing ingredients from close by.

Thanks for reading and I would love to hear what you are embarking on to make your skincare more sustainable.
